What Is It?

A tummy tuck will tighten and reshape your abdominal area and giving you a flatter and firmer midsection. During this procedure, doctors will tighten the abdominal muscles and remove excess or sagging skin. Both men and women are electing to get tummy tucks, especially after major weight loss.

If you are planning to have more children, you should postpone the procedure until you are done having kids. The reason is that during surgery, muscles are tightened, and future pregnancies could separate those muscles. A tummy tuck is also not a solution to weight loss. Healthy living is the key to losing weight and a tummy tuck is only done to firm up the midsection after weight loss has been achieved.

What to Expect After Surgery

Most tummy tucks are performed as outpatient procedures and patients return home a few hours later. It is not uncommon though in some cases for surgeons to require an overnight stay, especially after an extensive tummy tuck. Because abdominal muscles are involved, recovery time can be extensive. Patients should expect to be very sore and uncomfortable for at least the first week or so.

Patients are advised to get up and walk around but should anticipate spending the first few days resting at home. If necessary, drains could be temporarily placed at the incision site to help with fluid removal. These drains are usually removed just a few days after surgery and patients are given specific instructions for how to clean the are to avoid infection.

Depending on how physically demanding your job is, most people return to work within two to four weeks. However, if you have a physically strenuous job, expect to be away for up to a month. Tummy tuck results can last for years, assuming you don’t regain significant amounts of weight. Diet and exercise can also help you to maintain your results.

At Moein Surgical Arts, we prioritize your comfort and safety. Our goal is for you to have a great experience while providing the results you have been dreaming of.

But, first, we want to provide you with information about the tummy tuck procedure to help you decide if this is the right procedure for you.

Depending on the degree of change you are seeking, there are two options: a full tummy tuck or a mini tummy tuck. If you just want correction in your lower abdomen or a small amount of correction, the mini tummy tuck is likely what you are looking for. A full tummy tuck addresses a larger area and involves removing more tissue.

A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure to make the abdomen thinner and firmer. It removes excess fat and skin and often restores weak or separated muscles, creating a firm and smooth abdominal profile.

Something to keep in mind, however, is that a tummy tuck is not a substitute for weight loss or exercise. A tummy tuck is supplemental to exercise and a healthy diet, and the positive outcomes of this procedure can be undone by fluctuations in your weight.

A full tummy tuck takes roughly two to five hours to perform, beginning with a horizontal incision from one hip bone to the other. The incision lies between the pubic hairline and the bellybutton. In cases where removal of tissue from the upper abdomen is necessary, a second incision will be made.

There are several surgical methods employed during a full tummy tuck. Liposuction of underlying is performed using a cannula and medical suction. Then, the rejoining and tightening of displaced abdominal muscles in the abdominal wall is performed with internal sutures.
After the underlying tissues have been removed, excess skin is removed and the belly button is restored. At the end of the procedure, stitches, clips and other closures are used to seal the incision.

For a mini tummy tuck, only one to two hours are needed to perform and it involves a shorter horizontal incision and no second incision. This procedure involves removal of skin and fat and the tightening of ab muscle tissues, but the belly button isn’t typically affected.

After your tummy tuck, you will wear a compression garment to reduce swelling. You should expect swelling and bruising after your surgery, as those side effects are very common, and using ice and wearing the compression garment are great ways to speed up our healing process. Your stitches will be removed at a follow-up visit after a bit of recovery.

The recovery of a mini tummy tuck is typically one to three weeks (where you will need to take off of work) while the full tummy tuck requires two to four weeks off of work. You will not be advised to engage in strenuous physical activity for at least one month after your surgery.

“Do I need a tummy tuck, or is liposuction enough?” This is a question that many people have when thinking about recontouring their abdomen. In order to choose your best option for correction, you first need to identify the issue you are trying to correct.

If you are bothered by the round appearance of your stomach due to the presence of excess body fat, you can take care of the issue with liposuction. However, liposuction does not tighten the skin, so if your skin has become stretched and loose, liposuction will not leave you with a tight and flat abdomen. You will need to undergo a tummy tuck to have the excess loose skin surgically removed.

Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Babak Moein is expertly trained in both liposuction and the tummy tuck procedure and can provide you with your ideal results. If you need help improving the appearance of your abdomen, contact our office to schedule a consultation.

Tummy Tuck – Body Contouring

Over time and due to events like pregnancy or extreme weight loss, the shape of the body can change. Some of these changes, like sagging skin, are unwelcome. For those who are bothered by the amount of sagging skin around their abdomen, there is the tummy tuck.

A tummy tuck is a popular cosmetic procedure that can give you a flatter, tighter stomach. Sagging skin can develop as we age or when the skin is stretched due to pregnancy or weight gain. It’s unlikely that the skin will retract fully, even with dieting or exercise.

The procedure involves an incision from hip to hip that enables excess skin to be removed and the remaining skin to be pulled taut.
